From Killer of Humans to Humanity How We Treat Animals Reflects Who We Really Are We refer to ourselves as "human." That word should mean compassion, conscience, and justice. The truth, on the other hand, becomes unsettling when it pertains to our treatment of animals—including dogs, cats, cows, goats, donkeys, and birds. This isn’t just about animal rights. It concerns who we are when nobody is looking. Same Animals, Different Labels 1. “They’re” family”—Many of us see cats or dogs as family members. They give us unconditional love. We celebrate them on social media. But when a stray is beaten or killed on the street, we scroll past. Do we only care when it’s convenient? 2. We value cows, goats, and donkeys for their milk, meat, and labor because "they're useful." Their pain is only acknowledged if it affects their output. Their worth is tied to their use. 3. “They’re a business”—pet”s, livestock, and exotic animals — all part of an industry. Whether for profit, display, or entertainment, their lives become commodities. Their suffering becomes invisible. 4. "They're food": When a dog is hurt, we mourn, but we eat chicken whose life was filled with pain. Why is one life sacred and another a sandwich? 5. We commend bees, birds, and dogs for their contributions to ecosystems because "they're necessary for nature." But we value their existence only when it benefits us. What about their right to live for themselves? Are We the Civilized Ones — or the Monsters? Animals ask for very little: Some food, some water, shelter, freedom from pain, and a safe place to exist. We want everything. And yet, we deny them even these basics. Hunger & Neglect: Street dogs and cats roam for scraps, often sick and ignored. Abuse & Cruelty: Beatings, poisonings, street killings, slaughterhouses—many suffer in silence.
